He was telling me honestly that he really did not like one of the statements I often make. That statement as quoted from my book “The Marriage Guarantee” is as follows.

I would like to present this challenge to you. Begin each day
on your knees asking God to forgive you for your sins, and then
turn to your spouse and ask them to forgive you. Tell them you
know you have failed them and that you will try even harder to
love them as God loves them. Try it. You will be amazed at what
God will do.

He said “I don’t like it! I just woke up and I haven’t done anything yet and your asking me to ask God to forgive me and then ask my wife to forgive me.”

Oh, I said, I guess we don’t have the same definition of sin. So I went on to explain.

Originally, sin was an archery term, Its literal meaning was “missing the mark.” If you think of the “bull’s-eye” on an archery target. The mark of dead center is perfection. You can miss the mark in any direction. The interesting thing is that when you let the arrow fly, you may think that you were on the target, but the results may show differently. Likewise, your intention not to sin is not even a guarantee that you wont. For example your friend who has just attempted to hit the bull’s-eye may tell you that he thinks the wind is blowing from the east and in response you adjust to compensate, however you may find the wind has diminished and your aim will be off and in this illustration you will have missed the mark and have sinned. I further explained that missing the mark is anything less than perfect or less than the character of God Himself.

He admitted that this definition and illustration is a little overwhelming. It is impossible to hit dead center every time, especially when you consider the size of the bull’s eye of God’s perfection is smaller than the smallest particle known to man. In fact it is impossible to even hit the target at all without the God who created us and all our surroundings.

Overwhelming? Yes. Impossible? Yes, without God’s moment to moment guidance through His Holy Spirit, It is impossible. But, that is the point! We must have faith in Him and agree that without His constant guidance, we WILL sin.

Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

So with this new understanding of sin, I think it is safe to say that we always have something that we need to be forgiven for, even if our intentions were good. This is the foundational understanding that can help us not to judge others and to create an attitude of pre-forgiveness. Pre-forgiveness is a conscious choice to forgive each other in advance of the offense based on an understanding of our own need to be forgiven by them and more importantly by God. Not forgiving them, most often will be more detrimental to you than it will be to them.

There are many examples of pre-forgiveness in my book, but I will share one that relates to communication.

One of the most important commitments a husband and wife can make is to both agree that you will allow each other to start over or do over a conversation. What I mean here is that you are both guilty of not being able to communicate perfectly. SO, when one of you says, “WAIT, let me say that again, because I think you took it wrong.” The other must agree to allow a do over and allow a clarification.

You see, this is true in every relationship. One person speaks words and uses certain tones, the other person interprets the best they can, but almost always, the interpretation of the listener is influenced by, past experiences, self esteem, upbringing, personality and gender. It is almost impossible to get a clear understanding without being calm, asking clarifying questions and building on a foundation of forgiveness.

I have spoken to so many couples that struggle with this basic communication killer. That killer is deciding that you know what they meant and are not allowing further clarification.

So in closing or should I say beginning? Use time out’s or pauses (See me for more on this), Agree to allow clarification and be willing to forgive and allow the previous words to be forgotten, since they are not an accurate representation of you spouses intended meaning. And most importantly stay connected with God’s Holy Spirit who will guide you in word and in deed.

This morning I was thinking about the message that God has given me. He has given me this message in bits and pieces over the years, in part because He knows that I need to learn this stuff myself, before I can speak out to others. And, the most profound and effective words are the ones that He is currently teaching me. The message is always first for me and then for me to share with others. This is the reason that God lead me to write the book “The Marriage Guarantee”. In the book I have shared my heart and sole and most importantly how God has spoken to me as I have journeyed through Christian life and marriage.

But I have been saddened this morning and maybe a little frustrated. Now, I have to go out and SELL. Now comes the drinking. No, I am not talking about the bar. I am talking about leading a horse to water. But why would it ever be difficult to make them drink? Why should we have to? What could possibly be the reason that a horse or in this illustration, people would not want to DRINK? The truth is that it is much easier to lead them to the bar. You don’t even have to ask them to drink there.

So lets think this through, one reason they might not drink, is if they aren’t thirsty. Maybe they truly are drinking the water and are being led to the water too many times. But can we ever drink too much when it comes to the water of spiritual growth? So, that would lead us to a topic of complacency. I believe we should always be striving for a closer walk with God and should drink as much of that water as we can.

Another reason they might not drink is that they might believe that the water is not good. This may be the result of our marketing world. There are so many people saying “DRINK” that it may be difficult to know which water hole is the best. I guess it is true that there are some bad drinking holes and we are right to be cautious.

Finally, There are still those who will not drink. It is clear that they are thirsty. But they have found every excuse in the book to not read the book. First and most importantly, the Bible and then books that lead us to the Bible and to the Author.

So here I am leading you to water. I promise the water is good. And I think we are all more thirsty than we appear to be and once the water touches our lips, we will know that it is good and our thirst will be evident.

My final prayer is that the water I am leading you to, will give you a thirst for more directly from the creator of the water.

Guarantee

Guarantee means an assurance for the fulfillment of a condition. We usually associate a guarantee with the purchase of a car. But what happens to the guarantee on your car if the company goes bankrupt? We get guarantees from insurance companies. But what happens if the insurance company goes bankrupt? We get guarantees from the government. Is it possible the government can’t deliver on its guarantee?

God has given you a guarantee. Can you trust God’s guarantee? There is no greater assurance than God’s guarantee?

Here is a guarantee God has given you: Love never fails.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self- seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Not guaranteed

Stop looking for love from others and the world. This love will always fail you. God is the one who guarantees love never fails. Stop looking for others to love you. Your love comes from the author and creator of ALL.

God’s redemptive work is always aimed toward you. Take your focus off other people and focus on God’s guarantee to you. Love never fails. God’s love for you will never fail. HE has redeemed you. If you will love yourself, then you can love your neighbor. When God’s guarantee of love is in you, you are in a position to love others. Without the love and forgiveness of Christ in you, you cannot give love away.

When you seek first the Kingdom of God and HIS righteousness, all these things will be added unto you. When you love the Lord God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, then you can love others as Christ has loved you.

God’s love will never fail. His love is an unconditional love for all. Stop asking for others to love. You go love. Receive God’s guarantee of love never failing. Live a life of love from a heart filled with forgiveness toward others as God did for you and sent HIS son to die for you.

When you hear this question, I am sure many of you will say “Yes” and with good reason. Some of you are at work and your time is not your own. But what about your time after work? Will you still be “busy”? It seems we never have enough time to finish the things we want to finish or in some cases the things we have to finish.

What is the reason we are so busy? Some of you are busy because you like to be busy. You fill your time with the next project without even thinking if it is necessary. And others of you will fill your time with more relaxing things like reading or watching television.

Who is using their time most wisely? Well that question does not have a clear answer, although as you read this, I am sure you will have your own opinions of the best use of time based on your own beliefs or personality. And that is the point I want to make today. You can not trust your own opinion based on your personality. You may say to me “why not? It’s my time”, but is it? Whose time is it really? If you have taken a biblical financial class, you have learned that your money is not your own and that you need to seek God on every financial decision, because He has entrusted it to you safe keeping. So why not our time? It is true that everything we have been given has been given to us by God, so then why does it seem that we know these things but do not live like we believe them?

So I challenge you today and for days to come to ask God, “What is the best use of my time?” Don’t be busy just to be busy.

Psalms 46:10a Be still and know that I am God

Invest your time, talent and treasures as though they were not your own. Honor God and ask Him to help you when you plan your day. And always be willing to change your plan if His spirit moves you.
